HQRP 50W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel 50 Watt 12 Volt in Anodized Aluminum Frame 10 Years Limited Power Warranty

Product Description

1 Year Full Quality Warranty! 5 years limited power warranty: designed to produce over 90% of rated power. HQRP 50 Watt (50W) Solar Electric Power Panel. The solar cells are encapsulated beneath high transmission tempered glass. The rear surface of the module is completely sealed from moisture and mechanical damage. Construction of the module minimizes weight while providing a durable, protective environment for the solar cells. Considering the fact that solar panels are supplied with MC connector, You will need to buy aditionally cable adapter (not included into the set).

Sturdy aluminum frame protects the solar panel from deformation during transportation, high winds, bad weather. The firm frame allows to fix the panel in the places which are difficult to readch: on the roof, on lampposts, in forest lodges. It allows to fix the solar panel firmly on the sides of cars or boats, its sturdy design won't let the panel deformate and fail on the move. Durable and sturdy aluminum construction will help extend the use of solar panels in the long term. Panel is designed to produce over 80% of the nominal power within 25 years (this efficiency is not covered by the limited power warranty). Each panel is packed in a separate box and secured on both sides by polypropylene plates for better protection during transportation and installation!

4Works well on travel trailer
By M. R. McHenry
I purchased the solar panel to charge the batteries on my travel trailer. The plastic connector box on the back of the unit was debonded when I received the unit. The vender gave me a choice of returning it or gluing it back on myself for a partial refund (twice the shipping cost). I purchased some silicone adhesive and successfully glued it back on. The HQRP 10 amp controller was also purchased. Special MC4 connectors are required to connect to the panel. I purchased a 30 ft MC4 extension cable from another vender which I cut in half. This provided enough wire to connect from the trailer roof to the controller and then to the battery. The controller would not accept the Number 10 wire, so I had to break off three strands to make it fit into the connector. I also purchased 4 brackets to mount the panel to the trailer roof. The unit was sufficient to make my trailer batteries last for a week while camping at Lake Tahoe. The controller showed charging current as soon as it was light in the morning until dark.

5Solid Design, Great cloudy-day performance
By SeattleDave
I'm impressed with the frame, tempered glass, and sealed electronics of this panel. Furthermore, I am pleasantly surprised with the performance of this panel in not-so-bright light conditions. Very solid design, and I found that the output was not terribly sensitive to being installed at sub-optimum angles relative to the sun. I'll be adding more of this exact product to an array, over the next year or two. Advice: Plan ahead and get a larger-than-you-need Charge Controller, so that you have the option of adding more panels later on. Note: The shipper requries In-Person signatures for delivery, and I ended up having to take a day off of work to be able to be home for the delivery. FedEx was (understandably so) *very* strict about enforcing the shipper's policy, in this regard.

5HQRP 50W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel 50 Watt 12 Volt in Anodized Aluminum Frame plus HQRP Mousepad
By OldFart
For the price of what solar panels are going for these days its really crazy. But these panels are the cheapest that i could find that work on cloudy days. They work great. I have had them up on the roof now for about 3 weeks and they keep my small battery bank charged and ready to go.

4Very Good for Emergencies
By Bill McLean
I own four of these. Got them from another source. I have all of them in a closet waiting for an extended power outage. I purchased Radio Shack #274-1573 adapters so that I can plug them directly into my four Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 plus units (battery pack power sources). These power packs give me both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. I keep them fully charged by plugging them in to the wall socket. As for choosing solar panels, If I could afford it (and I was many years younger) I might have purchased the much more expensive monocrystalline solar panels. They retain 80% of original efficiency after twenty five years of continuous use. By contrast, these much cheaper S-1116 briefcase panels will only last about five years of continuous use. Also, the monocrystalline panels are much more efficient and thus smaller while producing higher wattage. A nice portable monocrystalline briefcase is available at much higher cost. It is even somewhat weather proof. The S-1116 is not weather proof. If you want to set up a lifetime solar power source, buy monocrystalline solar panels. But, I assume you are only wanting a portable solar power source for emergencies. If so, I think this cheaper S-1116 is your best choice. It might also be a good choice considering that they do last five years - and the scientific community is continuously improving, and reducing cost of, everything electronic. All four of my panels tested better than advertised. Maybe I should have given the S-1116 five stars.

4S-1116 Amorphous Briefcase Solar Performance Numbers
By Michael D. Zuteck
I bought this unit as a low cost way to gain some hands on experience with solar panels, and for possible use to recharge my laptop computer after a hurricane power outage. Via digital voltmeter I found:Open circuit voltage: ~ 21.5 vMax charging current: 400 - 500 ma Both the voltage and current will vary somewhat depending on temperature and insolation - these values are for shirt sleeve temperature and good sky conditions. I've used it to recharge the battery on a motorcycle that's used infrequently, and leave it on the front dash of an Astro van that is also infrequently used. It adds charge in both cases, but at a half amp tops its not a fast way to do it. The unit is reasonably well built, and the supplied hookup cables are useful. For light duty or maintenance charging, it can do the job. If you want to deliver a more robust amount of power, a monocrystaline panel will deliver a lot more juice for the same physical size, whether its briefcase or regular panel. Bottom line - if you understand its limits, this product is a good way to mess around with solar power at a modest price. But it you want to generate more serious levels of power, look at the mono or poly crystaline alternatives.

4Works Well
By Jack Stone
This product works very well and is easy to set up and get started. Excellent compact size. Beware of two things though and if I have any complaints these would be: look out for the shipping (new to amazon and didn't think it would be that much) and it is only a 13 watt solar panel. So if you're new to solar panels like I was, it will not charge a battery very fast and the 13 watt is the MAXIMUM. Expect less.I use this panel to charge the Duracell 600 power pack (28aH battery basically) and it just never had enough juice to do the job. I did combine it with the Coleman 36 Watt solar panel but I'm still testing it so I'll have to update this review later. So whats good about it? Its a great trickle charger, it won't over charge your battery (blocking diode) Just a little sunlight will start it charging, and it's extremely portable (long cord wraps up inside). The connectors are easy to use and if you're worried about controlling the charge I would recommend the Kintrex (7 amp / 12V) which has matching connectors making for easier hook up and will do the same thing as the Sunforce amp controller (but so much easier to use if you have little to no electrical experience). Overall does as advertised, but if you're not solar savvy I suggest you look through the rest of the solar panels available on Amazon. Sunforce is a good comparison with the same easy connectors.

5Fantastic portable/mobile power source, lighter than expected
By M. Klein
This is a superbly designed and built product, at least from the couple of days I've had it. I'll update the review if my impressions change. One thing I want to mention right away: the power pack itself is only 2.2 pounds in weight. For some reason various sources of this information show anywhere between 4 and 5 pounds. All the other accessories that come in the box are lightweight as well. The included AC adapter with cords is very lightweight and small and the 12V cigarette plug is as well. Too often we find that the main object of interest, like a laptop for example, has an attractive weight specified but comes with a massive AC brick and cables that weigh as much as the thing itself. Not so here.Physically, however, the Sherpa 120 is quite a big thing, about the size of a Webster's dictionary (if any of you remember those :-) or a really big Fodor's travel book. Make sure this meets your needs. It is not a petite device. So far I have used the power pack to test out running a ResMed S9 CPAP machine (CPAP only, not humidifier/heater) with an inverter, and it powers it successfully for a full 8 hours on a full charge. That pretty much meets the 120 watt-hour spec, as the machine averages around 15 watts (including loss in the inverter and S9's AC adapter). A full charge from AC takes 4 hours as specified. Construction quality is first rate.Only one issue so far: there is no indication of how to charge the power pack from a 12V source, although that charging method is given in the specifications. The charging plug is labeled as needing 15.3V. I will have to hunt down how to do that. I would have appreciated a 12V plug cable for charging in the box.A potential issue is how TSA treats this. This device qualifies as a "larger" spare lithium ion battery and, judging by the watt-hour rating, has about 10 grams of equivalent lithium content (ELC) -- [...]. This is perfectly acceptable as a carry on according to DOT guidelines (see [...] -- up to two such "spare" batteries with ELC up to 25 grams may be in carry-on luggage; cannot be in checked luggage). But the particular TSA inspector at a given gate on a given day may have other ideas.UPDATE: To charge this device from 12VDC source, you have to buy a separate adapter: a male cigarette to 4.7mm adapter, from Goalzero.com. It's $15 so not too bad. Also I'm not sure why Amazon had to delete the links I put in the main review -- they were to dot.gov web pages showing info about FAA treatment of li-ion batteries.FURTHER UPDATE (7/14/11): Just back from a 3-week African trip which was the reason for buying this battery in the first place, to power my CPAP machine when we did not have electricity available at night. It worked perfectly and TSA as well as foreign airline security inspections never even looked at it. Total non-issue. I even used it on the plane to power the machine (clear this ahead of time with the airline though).

5Portable power for CPAP and recharging devices
By D. Taylor
This review is for the Goal Zero Sherpa 120 battery Goal Zero Sherpa 120 Battery.I bought this battery to use on a backwoods trip to run a CPAP machine while I sleep. Since this would be running a medical device, I felt it was important to know I could trust the system. I carefully measured (using a Kill-a-Watt) the power my CPAP was consuming and knew that in good conditions the battery as found in the Sherpa 120 should last nearly 3 nights, so the solar panels wouldn't need to fully charge the system in a single day. I have also measured the CPAP (using a Watts-Up) when running directly from 12v and it consumes about 30 watts a night (vs 37watts a night on 120v).In field testing and subsequent follow up this is how I would rate the battery. The battery nicely holds a good charge and delivers the full capacity before going into a sleep state to protect itself from over discharging. I used the Nomad 27 solar panels to charge it and found that given my needs they were plenty large enough to top it off every day. To protect the battery which is a very key component to the system (in fact the one piece you must have), spend the extra few bucks on the silicone protective cover. The battery holds as much power as advertised, I've measured it several times and it continues to perform well. The Goal Zero system connects and works well. The only plug that seems slightly loose is the output plug on the battery. The other connectors are nice and sufficient. The output one should snap to give you extra security that your device will remain powered. For portable operation focus on using 12v loads directly and make sure you are running your necessary equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize your run times. If you can get away without using an inverter, all of your devices will run longer from a fixed battery capacity, plus your weight will be physically lighter. One important thing to note, if you leave the battery unattended for 30 days or more, it goes into a deep sleep even shutting down the display and internal circuits (to conserve power). When you turn it on again it'll appear discharged (the screen shows only 1 bar) but it really is holding the charge well. You can measure with a Watts-Up to see the voltage, but the logic they use to calculate how much charge remains needs to know the last total charge and it can't know that until you recharge it. If you plug it into the solar or wall charger for a bit (~20 min if was off for 30 days) it'll snap back and realize that it's actually fully charged. Tip: If you have a system and want to see what this deep sleep state looks like, you can simulate this for yourself by removing and then replacing the fuse on the back of the unit.In the posted pictures my battery has a Silicone sleeve to protect it. I highly recommend buying the sleeve to protect your battery. Goal Zero 91105 Black Small Silicone Sleeve for Sherpa 120*** Update: July 2,2012 I've used this battery on dozens of trips, camping, canoe trips, even a dive trip (on the boat) and it continues to work great. I've found I use the USB port often now to recharge my additional devices (cell phone, GoPro camera etc). This has been a very dependable battery and I'm glad I have it. This battery along with my 12v charger and solar panels gives me great freedom while maintaining power in the field.

5Best power pack!
By Alan Extreme
I own the Nomad 27, Sherpa 120, Sherpa UI and Light-A-Life. Have been using the power pack to charge my phone (Galaxy Note) and power the lamp (Light-A-Life) during camping, can't seems to be able to empty the pack. I even use it to power my digital alarm clock, lamp and charge my phone at home at the same time. This pack can also recharge laptop. So far this is the best solar product I've found! Now waiting to save up enough $ to get the second set for the other rooms.
