Solar Panel Charge Controller

When I ordered this controller, I thought that it was essential to prevent the solar panel from draining the battery at night. What I discovered when the flexible solar panel and this controller were delivered is that the panel output wiring contains a diode to prevent the panel from draining the battery at night. The documentation says that the real purpose of the controller is to prevent overcharging of the battery. The only drawback to using both the controller and the diode in the solar panel wiring is the small additional voltage drop of a few tenths of a volt, which should not be a problem, because the open-circuit output voltage of the solar panel is far above (20 volts or more)the approximately 13 volt level of a fully charged battery.

Poorly engineered and made - bad usability

This controller was shipped as part of a kit of cords and adapters to support Powerfile charger I bought. The one I got had the heat shrink tubing misaligned, so it is poorly constructed. It is also poorly designed, being big, clunky, and inappropriate for the highly portable Powerfilm. This wall mount charger has no place in an outdoorsman's solar charging kit - rather it belongs screwed to a wall somewhere. The cables were difficult to plug into the Powerfilm adapter (because they are cheap).To top it off, the controller did not work, making it necessary to return the whole kit. I'd rather make my own parts if this is the best Powerfilm has, but it behooves them to make something that is a little more in line with their excellent Powerfilm products.

Product Details:


This set of 3"x6" (80mmX150mm) solar cells are string ribbon multi crystalline cells made by an industry leading solar company that has the smallest carbon foot print - they waste the least silicon in making these cells. The cells are the original factory standard cell size, not other sizes cut by using home made tools which could damage the cells during cutting process.


The cells have never been used or soldered, and are not recycled from badly made panels like some factory installed tabbed cells are. There are no tabs on these cells so you can start from scratch and get experience in making solar panels. The following is a little more details regarding this kit: (solar cells, tabbing wires, bus wires, and flux)



DIY KIT Technical Data:


I. Cells: 110 pieces plus some bonus solar cells


The standard cell specifications are the following, though the individual cells can be above or below these standards.


Cell Specifications:


Average Power (Watts): 1.75Wp

Average Current (Amps): 3.5 Imax

Average Voltage (Volts): 0.5 Vmax

Thickness 200ìm = 0.2 mm

Exact Dimension: 3 1/4 inches x 6 inches, or 80 mm by 150 mm

Weight: Just above 6 grams or 0.2 oz.


II: Tabbing wires: $8 value - 110 feet of tabbing wires to connect the solar cells. Cut them into 6 inch sections to solder onto the bus bars on the cells.


III: Bus wires: $6 value - 11 feet of bus wires. Use them to connect them between the series and connect the tabbing wires ends to the junction box at the back of the panel.


IV: Flux: $7-$9 value - an easy-to-use flux pen that dispenses flux onto the bus bar or your tabbing wires without leaving a mess. It's used to aid soldering and bonding of the wires to the cells. A must have item.


V: Diodes: $4.5 value - 3 diodes rated at 15 amp. Schottky style diodes.

Nice, but Make Sure You have the Right Equipment

The material they provide is exactly as you see in the pic plus few extra cells for possible breaks in few. The item is exactly as described. However, I had difficulty soldering the cells together on the front side because the tip on my solder just was not the right type for it. You really need a flat screwdriver like tip on your solder and a minimum of 60 Watt iron. 45 Watt might work but it probably will be a bit slow to solder. If you do not have this, forget trying to put it together, as the tab wires are very stiff and requires perfect soldering setup.Everbright's material is high quality, but it definitely takes the right setup to really put these DIY cells together. You have to have a nice flat large insulated surface, like wood or plastic, with right ventilation for soldering and steady hands with alot of patience, as you will be doing alot of it to put together 36-40 cells.I decided that this was too much for me and decided to RMA. Mr Liu at Everbright was very nice and understood my situation and gave me a full refund even tho I messed with 3 of the cells and cut up some tab wires.Very nice company to do business.I would definitely buy from them again, but in the future, I will be looking for complete solar panel.

I've had this his solar charger for a few months now and it charged my G2x Android phone just fine. It works better when you charge the device your charging while the panel is getting a direct charge from the sun. The quality of the unit is well built and folds nicely in a compact form.

I bought 10 Instapark® Mercury 4S solar chargers but none for them worked. These solar chargers neither charged their internal battery nor charged any cell phone's battery. Lots of power and low cost

I bought the GP3000HD because I have a Go Power solar kit and it is great so I know that they generally have high quality products. This is a low cost 3000 watt inverter but it works, and it works quite well. It has 4 outlets on the front of the inverter to plug into, and it has a hardwire option as well. I saw a complaint on one of the reviews that someone could not get wiring for this inverter. I don't know if they thought that the inverter comes with cables but it does not. Go Power makes an install kit for this inverter and it is called the GPDC-Kit5 and it is on amazon.com and it is $250. This cable kit has a set of the largest cables I have ever seen. on the spec sheet it says they are 10 foot 4/0 welding cables with a special slow blow inverter fuse. I don't truly know if the cables need to be this large but I know 3000 watts is a lot of power. I have 4 batteries on my RV and I was able to start the Air conditioner and then my microwave so both were running at the same time. Obviously this drained my batteries quite but that is alot of power for a $350 inverter! Most of the time I am using the inverter for my cofee maker and the microwave but it is cool to know that I can throw on the AC if I felt like it. I would definitely recommend this inverter and I definitely recommend GO Power. I have called them before to get help on my solar kit install and they were very helpful.

NO POWER! BUT MADE RIGHT

3000HD unit malfunctioned after 3 weeks. Tech support was helpful but couldn't determine malfunction over phone. I was impressed they would just REPLACE the the unit before I even sent the problem one back! No questions asked! Now Thats customer service!!

Lack of Support

My wife purchased the GP-3000 HD as a gift for me. At that time the information/fact sheet was misleading, it has since been changed. I have tried for about 6 weeks to purchase the wiring kit for this but just kept getting the run around, even from Carmanah Co. In the end they would not return calls or e mails regarding this matter.I did find a company that would make me the "KIT", this took about ten days and another 400.00 plus dollars. Then I still had to make adjustments to hook it up and spend another $25.00 for parts. At this time I have not even turn the inverter on and have spent more for the wiring and parts then for the inverter and still the CARMANAH Co. is not returning calls !So if SUPPORT is something that may concern you, I would look for a different product !
